You can’t beat a deadline to get stuff done, can you? Be it a potential line stopping delivery or a date for a report, an immovable line in the sand gives everyone the transparency they need . The 4th June provided everyone in the cross-border industry with the “final” deadline to make the switch over to the Customs Declaration Service for exports. It’s been a long time coming and there was talk, even just a few weeks ago, of the line being redrawn yet again.

The switch to CDS meant that traders needed to prepare as well as everyone else in the customs clearance field. On that note, I’d like to offer my thanks to all of our clients who took the necessary actions with the information we had provided them with. In reality, the switch to CDS has actually been painless.
2024 is set to be a massive year in politics – and for international trade. From 6th to 9th June, all 27 states of the EU voted in in the worlds second largest election, resulting in a strong shift towards the right. What this means for trading relations with the UK is yet to be seen. The end of May then saw a rain-soaked Rishi Sunak announce a UK General Election for the 4th July.
So far, general election campaigning has seen little discussion on trade. This is somewhat surprising given that any incoming Government will inherit a country facing serious financial challenges and a need to strengthen its relations with the EU.
Of course, we then have the US elections to consider…
With Employee Ownership Day (21st June) on the horizon, summer holidays and the European football championships starting, we’re in for a busy month ahead. I hope you enjoy yours just as much as we will!
Best wishes,
Geoff
